Darius Slay on Charles Woodson: ‘He could almost be my granddaddy’ (Shutdown Corner)

Darius Slay was 7 years old when Charles Woodson made his Oakland Raiders debut in 1998, and while Slay is emerging as one of the league’s best cover corners in his third season on the Detroit Lions, Woodson continues to make his case for  greatest defensive back in league history  in his 18th season. [ Yahoo Daily Fantasy: $10 could win you $50K in our $350K contest for Week 11 ] A concussion suffered by Woodson’s fellow NFL geezer, 35-year-old Lions defensive back Rashean Mathis, leaves Slay as the oldest corner on Detroit’s roster at the ripe old age of 24, which blows the young’un’s mind with Woodson coming to town with the Raiders and the league lead in interceptions. Slay on Charles Woodson: “Man, he could almost be my granddaddy. This is crazy, he’s older than my mom.” Slay’s mom is 38, Woodson, 39. — Justin Rogers (@Justin_Rogers) November 19, 2015 It would be quite a surprise if somebody 15 years his senior was Slay’s granddaddy, but it’s not all that far from the truth. The Mississippi State product’s mother Stephanie Lowe was just 13 years old when she had him on January 1, 1991, and Slay has an 8-year-old son named Darion, per the Detroit Free Press . On cue, Woodson offered the most grandfatherly answer possible when asked how he stays so young. Raiders S Charles Woodson said Cabernet is the key to staying young: “It’s all in the grapes.” — Josh Katzenstein (@jkatzenstein) November 18, 2015 Woodson recently told reporters he hasn’t ruled out playing next season at age 40, and now all I can picture is him saying this while sitting in a rocking chair and sipping his glass of wine with Slay nestled in his lap. – – – – – – – Ben Rohrbach is a contributor for Ball Don’t Lie and Shutdown Corner on Yahoo Sports.
