Did Patriots use one weird trick to retain RB LeGarrette Blount’s rights?

I have been covering the NFL full-time for five years. I have never heard of the May 9 tender. But the New England Patriots have, and they’ve applied it to free-agent tailback LeGarrette Blount. Frequently linked to the Detroit Lions because of their need for a power back in the stable and, you know, the whole general-manager-used-to-work-for-the-Patriots thing, Blount has received a little-used and little-known one-year tender that ties him to the Pats in a unique way. Per ESPN.com, the May 9 tender is 110 percent of the prior year’s base salary, which for Blount is about $1.1 million.
